Shallow Thoughts: Dodgers Lose 3-1 on a Night When Runs Were at a Premium

Three First-Inning Runs Were Enough for the Padres to Win Despite a Strong Outing by Tony Gonsolin

Pitching, Defense Shine for Los Angeles, But Offense Stalls in Key Situations

Despite a strong outing by Tony Gonsolin and a few defensive gems, the Los Angeles Dodgers fell 3-1 to the San Diego Padres on Tuesday night at Petco Park. The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Dodgers, who fell to 3-3 on the young season.

Gonsolin was charged with three runs on six hits over five innings of work. He struck out six batters and walked one. The Padres scored all three of their runs in the first inning, with two coming on a home run by Manny Machado.

The Dodgers had a chance to get back in the game in the second inning when they loaded the bases with one out. However, they could not push a run across, as Padres starter Yu Darvish struck out the next two batters.

The Dodgers had another chance to score in the fourth inning when they put runners on first and second with one out. However, Darvish again came up big, getting Will Smith to ground into a double play.

The Dodgers finally got on the board in the fifth inning when Gavin Lux singled home Mookie Betts. However, that was all the offense the Dodgers could muster, as the Padres bullpen shut them down the rest of the way.

The Dodgers will look to bounce back on Wednesday night when they face the Padres in the second game of the series.
