Germany to Acquire 20 Additional Eurofighter Aircraft

Bundestag Approves EUR 55 Billion for 38 New Combat Jets

Sixth-Generation Fighter System FCAS Enters Next Phase

Germany will acquire an additional 20 Eurofighter aircraft, Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced on June 5, 2024. This brings the total number of Eurofighters in the German Air Force to 143.

The decision to purchase additional Eurofighters comes amid the ongoing development of the Future Combat Air System (FCAS), a sixth-generation fighter jet system being developed jointly by Germany, France, and Spain.

Despite delays and disputes over industrial participation, the development of FCAS is entering its next phase. The three participating nations have agreed on a revised schedule for the program, and the first flight of a demonstrator aircraft is expected in 2028.

The Eurofighter is a multirole combat aircraft designed to replace the Tornado and F-4 Phantom in the German Air Force. It is one of the most advanced fighter jets in the world, and it is used by a number of other countries, including Austria, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom.

The acquisition of additional Eurofighters will help to maintain the German Air Force's capabilities while the FCAS is being developed. The Eurofighter is a highly capable aircraft, and it will continue to play a vital role in the defense of Germany.
